Using soap and water is the best (and most traditional) way to keep your hands clean, but sometimes you don’t have a sink within easy reach to wash them. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel is a practical solution to this dilemma, as well as being very easy to make at home. Making this disinfectant gel is not only an excellent project for children and adults, it also saves you money and allows you to obtain a product that will protect you and your family from germs. Small jars can make great gifts.
Warning: Hand sanitizer needs at least 65% alcohol content to effectively kill viruses and bacteria.
Making unscented alcohol hand sanitizer gel
- For the effectiveness of the home disinfectant to be comparable to that of commercial products such as Purell or Germ-X, the final product must be at least 65% alcohol. Using 91% isopropyl alcohol will allow your product to be within that range.
- It’s best if you can find 99% rubbing alcohol. It is not mandatory, but it increases the germicidal efficacy of the resulting product.
- Aloe vera gel is also available in a variety of purities. You must choose the purest you find. Just read the label for information on purity. While this does not change the effectiveness of the product, using the purest you can find will ensure the final solution has the fewest additives and additional chemicals.
Gather your tools. The necessary tools are also easily found at home, which makes this process much easier. You will need a clean bowl, a spatula (or spoon), a funnel, and a bottle of used liquid soap or hand sanitizer. If you don’t have an empty jar on hand, you can use any container you want, but with a lid.
Combine the ingredients. Pour 3/4 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1/4 cup of pure aloe vera gel into the bowl. With the help of the spatula (or spoon), stir vigorously until the ingredients are completely mixed.
- If you prefer not to mix by hand in a bowl, you can use a food processor.
Pack the product. Pour the mixture straight from the bowl into your chosen jar using the funnel. Put the lid back on the jar. Now you have your final product and can use it immediately.
- The solution will keep for more than 6 months. Store it out of direct sunlight to maximize its life.
- Put the solution in small bottles that easily fit in a purse, backpack or briefcase to use wherever you are. If you buy any commercial disinfectant, save the bottle so you can reuse it later, as it is perfect for this home project.
- You can usually buy new empty jars this size at the grocery store. Check the aisle for travel-sized personal care items.
Use the disinfectant correctly. There is a suitable way to use it so that it is most effective. Before starting, hands should be clean of visible grime. The sanitizer is not made for hands that look dirty.
- Using an amount the size of the palm of your hand, rub your hands quickly for 20 to 30 seconds, running the disinfectant under your nails, between your fingers, on the backs of your hands and wrists.
- Let it dry completely, without wiping your hands with a towel or rinsing them with water.
- Once it’s dry, the process is complete.
Add essential oils
Determine your purposes for adding essential oils. You can add them to the disinfectant just for their scent.
Choose essential oils for aromatherapy. Although there is no strong evidence, some people think that inhaling the aroma of a specific essential oil stimulates the brain can cause a variety of mental and emotional reactions. If you add it to hand sanitizer, you can find some positive effects from smelling these fragrances. You can choose an oil or combine different aromas. Certain essential oils are often used more than others in hand sanitizers.
- Cinnamon essential oil is said to reduce drowsiness and improve concentration.
- Lavender essential oil may promote relaxation and a sense of calm.
- Rosemary essential oil is thought to have the ability to improve information retention, alertness, and memory.
- Lemon essential oil may ease depression and sadness while boosting energy.
- Some people have found peppermint essential oil to have a refreshing scent that calms tired nerves and improves alertness.
Be cautious. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can cause negative side effects when not used correctly. Pregnant women and people with immune deficiencies should not use them without first consulting their doctor. If you are using essential oils for the first time, test them on a small section of skin before adding them to hand sanitizer and using them topically.
- Never apply them directly to the skin without first diluting them. Some irritate the skin due to their high concentration.
- When working with essential oils, use the highest quality products you can find. Look on labels for the phrases “pure grade,” “aromatherapy grade,” “certified organic,” and “therapeutic grade.”
Add your chosen oils to the disinfectant. Pour 2/3 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1/3 cup of pure aloe vera gel into the bowl. Add 10 drops of your chosen essential oils. Do not exceed 10 drops. With the help of the spatula (or spoon), stir vigorously until the ingredients are completely mixed.
Making Cereal Alcohol Hand Sanitizer Gel
Get the ingredients. Most of the components needed to make hand sanitizer are common household products, so you probably already have most of them. It starts with a 190 proof bottle of alcohol, which is 95% alcohol. Since the sanitizer needs to be at least 65% alcohol to be effective, using a higher grade will ensure the strength you need. You will also need simple aloe vera gel and any essential oils you want to use.
- Always double-check the alcohol content before purchasing a bottle, as many commercial brands are under 190.
- Remember that the alcohol concentration may be diluted with other ingredients, so it will not maintain an alcohol content of 95%.
- The choice of essential oils depends entirely on your taste. The most common are rosemary, tea tree, cinnamon, geranium, peppermint, lemon, and lavender. You can use more than one if you want, but the total amount of essential oil you use should not exceed 10 drops.
- Aloe vera gel is also available in a variety of purities. You must choose the purest you find. Just read the label for the purity information.
Gather your tools. You will need a clean bowl, a spatula (or spoon), a funnel, and a bottle of used liquid soap or hand sanitizer. If you do not have an empty jar on hand, you can use any container you want, but with a lid.
Combine the ingredients. Pour 1 ounce (30 ml) of pure alcohol and 3 ounces (90 ml) of pure aloe vera gel into the bowl. Add 10 drops of your chosen essential oils. With the help of the spatula (or spoon), stir vigorously until the ingredients are completely mixed.
- You can adjust the amount of the products you use if you prefer, but keep the alcohol in a 2-to-1 ratio with the gel to ensure sufficient potency.
- If you prefer not to mix by hand in a bowl, you can use a food processor.
Pack the product. Pour the mixture straight from the bowl into your chosen jar using the funnel. Put the lid back on the jar. Now you have your final product and can use it immediately.
- Use the disinfectant in 1 month. Store it out of direct sunlight.
Warnings
- Alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel is practical for ease of transport, but should not be a substitute for washing with soap and water when available.
- Don’t use the disinfectant too much throughout the day. It can leave your skin dry, and unless you’re traveling and don’t have access to a sink to wash your hands with soap, you won’t need to use it as much.
- Keep hand sanitizers (household or commercial) out of the reach of children.
- It can be very easy to mismeasure ingredient ratios, which can dilute the alcohol and render the sanitizer ineffective. Mix and use hand sanitizer at your own risk.
